The Miss Virginia Organization is pleased to announce that the 75th annual scholarship competition will be televised on more stations than recent years.  The broadcast will take place from 9 – 11 PM EST on Saturday, June 26, on these 8 TV stations:  WSET ABC 13 Roanoke/ Lynchburg;  WRIC ABC 8 Richmond;  WVIR NBC 29 Charlottesville; WHSV My Valley WHSV-DT 49.4, Harrisonburg;  WCYB CW 4 DT 28.3 / Bristol Tri-Cities; WDCW 50 Washington, DC;  WSKY-TV 4 IND. Hampton Roads/Norfolk;  and WVVA CW 2 Bluefield, WV.  This year’s telecast will not only reach homes throughout the state of Virginia; it will also be broadcast in Washington, DC; Maryland; with additional coverage in West Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.  30 young women from across the Commonwealth will compete for the title and the chance to follow last year’s winner’s footsteps, Caressa Cameron, with the chance to become Miss America.

“We’ve worked very hard to improve the quality of our product,” says Harlen Gudger, Executive Director.  “We hope this will be a break-out year for us with increased coverage and more viewers”.  The pageant production team is making technical changes to the audio and visual components of the broadcast.  The goal is to telecast a more energetic show for television.  WSET-TV, ABC 13 Roanoke/Lynchburg is once again serving as the flagship station of the TV network.  “We’re thrilled they’re still partnering with us so strongly to give viewers across the state the opportunity to see who their new state representative becomes” Gudger adds.  “We are very pleased with our relationship with their staff and can’t thank them enough for helping us in so many ways during the past several years.  They are an integral part of what we do.  Their management, news, and marketing teams do outstanding things for us throughout the year and we’re extremely fortunate to have them on our team”

This year, instead of an independent production company handling several of the telecast production duties, WSKY-TV Television Productions in Chesapeake, VA is taking over that aspect of the broadcast.  “After doing a great deal of research with other state pageants and national TV production companies, we decided to entrust the quality of this year’s telecast with WSKY.  They gave us a very strong proposal with demos of other high-quality telecasts they have produced and their team is extremely excited to broadcast the Miss Virginia Pageant””, adds Mark Schreier, Director / Producer of the event.

“For the first time, the Miss Virginia Pageant telecast will be presented in high definition in selected television markets throughout Virginia and surrounding states” said Glenn Holterhaus, WSKY’s Executive Producer of the telecast.  Holterhaus is the president and managing partner of WSKY-TV.

More information about the show and the performers will be announced soon.  “With this being our 75th anniversary, be sure to mark it on your calendars and be prepared for an awesome show”, says Bootie Chewning, Executive Producer.  “We’re making some great changes with the production that will give everyone something to enjoy,” she adds, “including several elements of reality-TV to keep viewers engaged throughout the broadcast.”

The Miss Virginia Scholarship Program is an official preliminary to the Miss America Pageant, the world’s leading provider of scholarships for young women.  Last year, the Miss America Organization awarded more than $45 million in scholarships at local, state, and national levels of competition.  In Virginia this year, contestants at local and state levels will receive more than $100,000 in cash scholarships.  These young ladies, in turn, raise more than $ 30,000 for the Children’s Miracle Network, the official community service platform of the organization.
