Platform Issue: “Fit and Fun”
There is no debating that childhood obesity is a growing problem in America. Obesity not only has social implications for overweight children, but also puts youth at an increased risk of certain health problems – some potentially fatal. While there are many theories for combating this problem, Desiree believes that leading by example is the most effective way to bring about change and hopes to serve as a catalyst to bring awareness to this issue, both locally and nationally as Miss Virginia.
Visiting schools throughout the Commonwealth to share her message will be a key part of this initiative. Through her experience as a Health and Physical Education teacher, Desiree developed lesson plans targeted toward students of all ages to encourage them to stay active and make smart food choices. During her year of service, she hopes to inspire both students and their parents to commit to simple lifestyle changes that will improve their health and emotional well-being.
